How to Rollover Old Accounts to Embark

Why Rollover an Old Account?

If you have an old 401(k), IRA, or other employer plan from a previous employer or a non-retirement brokerage account, rolling it over into your Embark account may allow you to consolidate your investments, potentially reduce fees, and simplify your financial plan. At Embark, your assets can be managed with personalized advice and integrated with your broader financial goals. However, a rollover is not appropriate in all cases. You should carefully consider factors such as investment options, fees, and services before deciding to proceed.

How to Rollover an Old Account to Embark

To rollover an old account to Embark, go to www.Embark-Invest.com and log in to your account. On the top right of your screen click “Transfer or rollover” to open the drop-down menu, select “Rollover to Betterment”. Choose what kind of account you want to rollover/transfer to Embark. Depending on the account type, you will be required to answer questions pertaining to the account you wish to rollover. After answering all the questions, you will be prompted to choose an existing account or open a new account, to rollover your old account into at Embark. Depending on the type of account you are rolling over, the final steps may differ, but you will receive full instructions on how to complete your rollover.

For a 401(k) rollover, you will be required to contact your previous employer to begin the process and complete any steps they require. Once complete, instruct your previous employer to mail the rollover check to the address provided on the rollover form.

For IRA transfers, Betterment uses a direct transfer process to roll over existing IRAs into Betterment IRA accounts. These transfers are generally non-reportable transactions and typically do not result in tax consequences. You should consult with a tax professional to understand your specific situation. In a direct transfer, your current IRA provider will send Betterment a check or wire for the value of your account.

Once the rollover is initiated you can track its status under the “Transfers” tab in your Embark account.
